■ From 1964 through 1968, Drs. Marshall L. and Marguerite R. Shearer gave sex lectures, on invitation, to sororities and fraternities and other housing units on the campus of the University of Michigan. During that period they were booked once a week for entire academic years. These talks continued during 1969-70 as well, but to larger audiences. During that time Marshall was on the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan School of Medicine, and Marguerite was a physician at the University Health Service.

■ In 1970, they were recruited by Dr. Masters and Mrs. Johnson as clinical and research associates. They saw a third of their patients with sexual inadequacies as a therapy team, and were paired with Dr. Masters, Mrs. Johnson, and other staff members for their other patients. In addition, Marshall was responsible for developing the curriculum and doing the initial training for professionals in regard to the foundation’s newly described treatment for sexual inadequacies. Marguerite was in charge of the infertility clinic.

■ In 1972 they returned to Michigan and continued doing sex therapy, jointly for a while, then Marshall on his own. Marguerite used many of the same principles in her day-to-day family medical practice, including obstetrics and gynecology.

■ From 1973 to 1996, the Shearers wrote a sex-help column, answering readers’ questions for the Detroit Free Press, which was also distributed over the Knight-Ridder wire.

■ Marshall spent his career as a Board Diplomat of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). He was also Board certified in both Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry. Marguerite continues to be Board certified in Family Medicine and also in Medical Management.

■ Marshall and Marguerite had been married since 1961, the only marriage for each of them, until Marshall’s death in 2014. They have three adult children.
